Educational Resources in the Spokane Metropolitan Area: A Response to Senate Floor Resolution 1975-137.
Washington State Council for Postsecondary Education, Olympia.
Six postsecondary institutions currently serve the Spokane area: a private university, two private colleges, one public college, and two community colleges. The two community colleges account for 60 percent of the total headcount enrollment in Spokane County postsecondary institutions. A seventh institution, Washington State University, views the city as part of its primary service area, especially for certain professional program offerings. The area is also served by several local proprietary institutions, and educational programs offered at Fairchild Air Force Base accommodate both service and non-service students. This document summarizes the offerings of the postsecondary educational resources in the Spokane metropolitan area, and reviews issues of inter-institutional coordination, including responsiveness, access, diversity, and coordination. The report concludes that there is no need for significant expansion of public educational resources in the Spokane area. Unmet educational needs pertain only to specific programs which can be provided if interest arises. Data on educational resources are tabulated and graphed, and lists of postsecondary program offerings are appended. (NHM)
