NOVA: A Community Service/Education Experiment at the University of Nebraska.
The efforts of the University of Nebraska to build a new educational program based on community service are described. NOVA combined traditional instruction with a year-long field experience for undergraduate students in Nebraska communities. Emphasis was on problems related to poverty. The planning phase of the project is reviewed, along with an administrative overview and faculty perceptions of the program. Student volunteers are also described. Positive assessments were offered by both students and faculty, but the program was terminated June 30, 1974. Recommendations for future similar programs particularly devoted to human service are offered. It is suggested that experiential programs be staffed by an interdisciplinary faculty working as teams, not as minidepartments, and that some regular, nontraditional instruction be incorporated into the experiential program. The most significant outcome of NOVA is seen as a new realization of the strength, resourcefulness and ability of university students. (LBH)
