First Report of the Preliminary Findings and Recommendations of the Interagency Collaborative Group on Hyperkinesis.

Presented is the preliminary report of the Interagency Collaborative Group on Hyperkinesis (ICGH) with functions which include exchanging information, coordinating expertise, evaluating existing data from ongoing research and reviewing proposed research for the purpose of making recommendations concerning hyperkinesis and dietary factors. The report contains sections on the definition of the hyperkinetic syndrome; diagnosis of hyperkinetic disorders; prevalence of the syndrome; factors (social, biochemical, nutritional, and allergy or intolerance to substances) related to hyperkinetic disorders; toxic reactions; safety testing of food additives; treatment programs; dietary intervention; research relevant to B. Feingold's hypothesis; minimum design requirements for a dietary study; and model research designs. Included among the recommendations of ICGH is that a valid assessment of the Feingold dietary regimen be designed to test the general therapeutic change that may follow from a mixture of the regimen's components. Appended is a report on the use of stimulant drugs in the treatment of behaviorally disturbed young school children which covers such issues as the promotion of drugs by industry and the media, the risk of drug dependency in later years, and the rights of parents.
