The Demographic background to Changing Enrollments and School Needs.
Davis, Russell G.; Lewis, Gary M.
This paper discusses projected changes in population trends and school enrollments for the United States 1974-1990. The parameters and dynamics of population change are examined, and the population projections of the U.S. Bureau of Census are reviewed in detail. The expected geographic distribution of the projected population is analyzed, and shifts in school enrollments are projected on the basis of expected demographic trends. Finally, the impact of the expected population change on school enrollments is discussed. Numerous data tables and graphs illustrate the discussion. Included in the appendix is a year-by-year projection of total U.S. enrollment for each grade K-12 for the period 1974-1990. In addition, a supplemental section summarizes enrollment-related trends in U.S. education for the period 1950-1970. (JG)
