The Role of University Faculty in the Transfer of Technological Information.

Examined in this paper are some of the factors which presently interact with, and which will continue to interact with, the transfer of technological information, with particular emphasis on those factors which play on the role of the university faculty member. Among these factors are the composition and goals of the student population the faculty member will face, demands made on public agencies and institutions of higher learning, the tendency toward conflict between intradisciplinary and interdisciplinary cohesiveness among faculty, and some methodological approaches which can be used in achieving technology transfer. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration and American Society for Engineering Education (NASA-ASEE) Engineering Systems Design Approach is highlighted as an innovative concept which can be used as an effective model for sensitizing discipline-oriented faculty members to their responsibilities in the understanding and transfer of scientific and technological information to meet social needs.
