The Research, Development of a Design, and Evaluation of a Career Related Reading Program.
Bales, Jimmy Charles; Smith, Helen Armstrong
The authors of this thesis identified research on reading programs related to using vocational content for teaching reading to vocational students; developed a design for a vocational-related reading program which included needs assessment, goal and objectives, the vocational related reading program, and a plan for the implementation of the program; and evaluated the effectiveness of a vocational reading program. The sample included eleventh and twelfth grade male vocational students at a high school in South Carolina. The 32 experimental students took a vocational-related reading class, whereas the 32 control students took a traditional reading class. Both groups were given a pretest and posttest in reading vocabulary, reading comprehension, and total reading. The cost of materials and equipment used exclusively by the two programs was also compared. From the findings, it was concluded that a vocational-related reading program is economically feasible and that vocational students will make as much progress in this program as in the traditional program.
