Professional Development Program for Counselors in Illinois: Current Status and Direction.
Childers, John H., Jr.; Nejedlo, Robert J.
During 1973-74, the Illinois Guidance and Personnel Association Senate constituted a Competency-Based Concerns Committee. This committee was charged with examining alternative approaches to competency-based counselor certification as well as alternative methods of upgrading the professional skills of counselors in Illinois. This workshop presents the rationale for the IGPA Senate's concern with ongoing counselor skill development, the committee's evaluation from a Competency-Based Concerns to the Professional Development Program Committee, and the six task forces and the individual charges in implementing the program in Illinois. Special emphasis is given to Task Force I, Development of a Model Counselor Skills Training Program. The model, in its fourth revision, identifies eight areas of professional competency essential to the successful delivery of a number of services identified with counseling and human agencies. For each area of professional competency, a goal statement is provided. Following the goal statement, abilities are listed, and possible procedures for implementation are presented. (Author)
