A Comprehensive Career Education Development Project for the School Districts of Muskegon and Muskegon Heights. Final Report.
Pelkey, Edward L.
The career education development project presented in the report covers the period from July 1, 1972 through June 30, 1975, with approximately seven percent of the combined school populations of Muskegon and Muskegon Heights, Michigan, participating. The stratified, selected sample was comprised of one experimental group of 202 "target school" students and two control groups of 513 students. The K-12 curriculum was restructured to provide for occupational education, and project classes contained a high percentage of deprived children. An Occupational Development Inventory (ODI) was constructed to measure student achievement in occupational knowledge, vocabulary, planning, interests, attitudes, and values. Scores of control groups and experimental groups were compiled and analyzed, and results are detailed in the evaluation report. Project evaluation, which comprises most of the document, includes a complete set of all instruments used in the project, the pre-post-test procedures, and the test data. Results of the ODI did not indicate any significant improvement in target school student's occupational knowledge. However, as a result of the project, students' understanding of the advantages of school was improved through an increased awareness of the relationship between academic subjects and the working world, and career education activities brought the schools and the business community into a closer working arrangement to promote understanding of employment requirements and vocational potentials for the students. Appended are all K-12 ODI instruments (168 pages). (MF)
