Southwestern Community Coll., Creston, IA.
The study was conducted to determine student needs K-14 and to develop a planning guide for implementing career education programs. Twenty-two school districts in 13 counties of Merged Area 14, South Central Iowa, were surveyed using parent, student, and teacher questionnaires. The following areas were covered by the survey, and the results are tabulated in detail: (1) student needs and interests and course offerings (interest areas in order of preference were: general occupations, agriculture and conservation occupations, and transportation); (2) current course offerings and other activities provided by social agencies; (3) local school needs as viewed by teachers and administrators; (4) student enrollment; (5) geographical constraints and population distribution; (6) resources available to provide career education; and (7) potential for employment opportunities relative to preparatory programs. A five-year plan for implementing career education is presented, divided into 16 procedural steps. Recommendations are presented based on the findings of the study. Appended materials include the following: (1) abstract of project proposal, (2) committee members, (3) minutes of meetings, (4) survey instruments, (5) monthly and quarterly reports from the study coordinator, and (6) a list of basic resource documents available from EDRS.
