Thomas, William E.
Described is a program designed to present social awareness skills to moderately, severely, and profoundly mentally handicapped persons (beginning with ages l3-l5 years) through group team play as well as through experiences in movement and physical activity. Of the several applicable teaching methods presented, behavior modification is discussed at length, and its effective use is considered of prime importance to the program's success. Descriptions of activities in the areas of locomotion, manipulation, relays, lead-up, and wheelchair games and exercises for strength, endurance, flexibility, and agility make up the bulk of the document. Each activity listing includes information on equipment needed, formation of participants, objectives, directions for play, and additional comments. (Author/SB)
