The Remedial Role of Pre-School Education: Mentally Retarded Children.
Watson, B.
A study of the benefits of early childhood education for mentally retarded children focuses on preschool services in the Sheffield Metropolitan District of South Yorkshire, England. Reviewed are incidence and etiological statistics along with early detection and multidisciplinary assessment procedures in the district. Educational programs based on individual assessments are described, and agencies and groups serving parents and the profoundly handicapped are considered. Aspects of teacher preparation and inservice training are recounted. Pointed out is the need for such future research as comparative studies of the effectiveness of preschool provisions in various settings and evaluation of the effectiveness of integrating mentally retarded children with regular class preschool children.
