Identification of Actual Tasks Performed and Relative Amount of Time Spent on Tasks by Vocational-Technical Guidance Personnel.
EPD Consortium D, Richardson, TX.
A mail survey of vocational-technical counselors and guidance personnel in Texas was conducted to identify the tasks performed and amount of time spent in the performance of these tasks. A questionnaire was distributed to 40 occupational orientation teachers (with 87 percent responding) and 160 counselors and guidance personnel (with 92 percent responding). Eighty tasks were identified and divided into 11 sections: pupil appraisal, staff counsulting, referral work, counseling, public relations, placement, planning and development of the guidance program, educational and occupational planning, counselor as a person, parent help, and local research. Data were analyzed according to the occupational orientation educators, vocational-technical counselors and guidance personnel, and a composite analysis of the two groups. Each task was analyzed in the following areas: rank by percent of respondents performing; cumulative sum of average time spent by all respondents; average percent time spent by all respondents; average percent time spent by respondents performing; and percent of respondents performing. The study concludes that the respondents could identify the tasks and the amount of time required by each task. The data produced offers useful information for developing curriculum for vocational-technical counselors and guidance personnel. A bibliography is included and the questionnaire appended. (EC)
