Preliminary Survey of Postsecondary Education Programs in Alaska.
Behlke, Jane H.
This is a survey of the postsecondary educational scene in the State of Alaska. The first segment of the report discusses the major institutions and agencies involved in the delivery of postsecondary education in the state, the second analyzes offerings, the third presents additional observations, and the fourth summarizes the findings. Finally, recommendations for further studies are made. Some findings are: (1) institutions from which information was available enrolled a total of 24,747 and granted a total of 3,022 certificates and degrees; (2) a wide variety of postsecondary courses and programs were offered; (3) the need for this report was occasioned by the lack of a single agency to which postsecondary education agencies and institutions regularly submit data about students, programs and finances; (4) current, accurate, and complete information for prospective students was not available in a consistent fashion. Recommendations include establishing: (1) an appropriate means of systematically and regularly collecting information; (2) an appropriate method to disseminate information; (3) a continuing study that would identify and rank problems; (4) a management information program; and (5) a criterion for judging the adequacy of program availability.
