Booz Allen and Hamilton, Inc., Washington, DC.
This report assesses the needs of and resources for children of alcoholic parents, and recommends strategies based on the identification of service gaps. The number, characteristics, life experiences, feelings, coping mechanisms, and problems of children of alcohol parents are discussed. Needs common to this group and factors which variably condition the impact of parental alcoholism on children are identified. A survey of actual and potential helping resources subsumes the nuclear and extended family, general community cntacts, child and family agencies, alcoholism treatment programs, and specialized services for the children of alcoholic parents. Common characteristics of these helping resources are noted, as are the gaps between needs and resources and conditions which have created such gaps.
