This booklet offers a summary of research literature on educational productivity, as well as interpretive comments by the author on the implications of such research for restructuring educational programs at the elementary and secondary levels. The booklet is organized in three sections. Part 1 describes the principal methods and techniques used in school productivity research and discusses the strengths and shortcomings of each. Part 2 describes the findings of school productivity research, focusing especially on the impact of teacher characteristics, educational practices, school service organization, and pupil characteristics. Part 3 discusses the implications of what we know about school productivity for future public policy. (Author/JG)
