The main intentions of the two-day teachers' conference on language disabilities held at East Carolina University were to provide background information on how children acquire linguistic habits, to identify and suggest remedies for certain socioemotional problems which interfere with learning, to isolate problems arising from diversity in linguistic competence, and to describe reading and writing remedial programs for semiliterate students. This volume contains the following articles, all of which were presented at the conference: "The Acquisition of Language"; "Detecting and Correcting Reading Deficiencies"; "Six Strategies for Improving Freshman Composition Instruction in the 1970s"; "Freshman Composition: A Course Conceptualization"; "Achieving the Goals of Remedial English Programs"; "Developing Language Skills for Modern Living"; "Phonology and the New English"; "Accommodating Deficiencies in Reading and Writing"; and "Who Requires Remedial Reading."
