In 20 groups of secondary teaching majors discussing a school-related problem, male subjects dominated the decision-making process, initiating more verbal acts, exerting more influence, and displaying an interaction style different from that of the females. It is concluded that mixed-sex teacher groups are likely to develop status orderings based on sex rather than on actual competence at the task. In order to create more equal participation, it is suggested that groups be cooperative rather than competitive, that they contain an equal number of women and men, and that intervention by administrators be used to elevate the status of women teachers.
