This report provides comprehensive statistical information on the size and scope of federal funding for research and development (R&D) and the types of institutions and purposes to which such funds are directed. The report covers fiscal years 1973, 1974, and 1975. Some of the highlights of the report include: (1) a 20 percent increase in energy activity paces industrial R&D spending in 1973; (2) federal R&D funding for fiscal year 1975 continues to decline as a share of the total budget; (3) state agency R&D activities almost quadrupled from fiscal year 1964 to fiscal year 1973; (4) R&D expenditures of independent nonprofit institutions approach one billion dollars in 1973; and (5) federal funding in higher education: Academic Science shows decline in fiscal year 1973.
