Presented is a compendium of state lawsuits establishing the legal and constitutional rights of mentally retarded citizens. Cases cover the following rights: to equal educational opportunity; to be free from inappropriate educational classification, labeling, and placement to community services and to treatment in the least restrictive environment; to be free from peonage and involuntary servitude; to be free from restrictive zoning ordinances; to have free access to buildings and transportation systems; to be free from unconstitutional commitment practices; to procreate; and to have equal access to adequate medical services.
