Exploring Writing Careers in Journalism.

The career exploration program for grades 9 through 10, as part of a comprehensive K through 10 career development program, attempts to develop an awareness of and appreciation for work, extend knowledge of the variety of career opportunities, and provide experiences in career areas of individual interest. The document, a collection of materials consisting of student learning experience packets, instructional materials, and resources, is designed to introduce the students to careers in journalism. The introduction includes: a definition of the career area, course objectives, course strategies, procedure, evaluation, exploration trips, suggested time table, and teaching guidelines suggestions for producing a newspaper and organizing a newspaper staff (simulation). The lesson plans, organized according to objectives, activities, and resources, examine the careers of: reporter, copyreader, copywriter, feature writer, columnist, special editor, and editor-in-chief. Also provided are opportunities for individual exploration and self-evaluation (with sample questions). Strategies include simulation, projects, exploration trips, and interviews. The appendix contains job titles; forms for self-analysis, job analysis, and employment application; procedures for an exploration trip (permission and report), a resources list, and guidelines for field trips in career development.
