Challenges to Academic Disciplines in an Era of Interdisciplinary Emphasis.
Paige, Lowell J.
The author's premise rests on the endless parade of public controversies regarding education. He specifically opposes the views of those scientists who feel that they, and their work, are being discredited and that the scientific capability of the nation is being dismantled. He restricts his remarks to the science disciplines. Rather than crediting organizational structures with providing a basis for interdisciplinary work between the frontiers of knowledge and the ultimate impact of scientific discoveries upon society, thought should be on the attitude of individual faculty members who are the prime component of these efforts. A challenge to the science disciplines is to provide students with an understanding that specialized subject matter is subject to influences both internal and external to their discipline. This attitude, the author states, will expedite the desired interdisciplinary efforts that are needed. (Author/EB)
