Sponsored Research of the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
Carnegie Commission on Higher Education , Berkeley, CA.
Three distinct volumes comprise the summary report of the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education at the conclusion of its endeavors from 1967-1973. This third volume of the summary report is devoted to more than 80 research projects sponsored, in whole or in part, by the commission. Most of the abstracts included in this book have been taken directly from the reports after a final manuscript became available. One goal of this compilation is to present abstracts of the reports in concise, clear, and comprehensible form. Another is to present, in one volume, a distillation of a substantial body of contemporary interdisciplinary research into higher education. The works represented in this volume are of three basic types. The first type includes a series of profiles of different kinds of institutions of higher learning and of certain key functions of colleges and universities. A second type of book included in the series comprises a group of significant essays about American higher education as seen from the viewpoint of well-informed foreign observers. The third, and largest group of books, is concerned with subjects of current special concern. This group also contains reports on the most extensive survey ever made of American student and faculty opinion and a valuable statistical portrait of higher education. Notes about the authors, Carnegie Commission reprints, and an index are also included. (Author/PG)
