Metathesis of Obstruent Clusters. Working Papers in Linguistics, No. 14.
Silva, Clare M.
This paper is concerned with the metathesis of contiguous sibilants and stops. The paper is divided into the following parts: 1) a summary of several different descriptions of obstruent metathesis, 2) a list of examples illustrating the process, 3) discussion of experimental work on the perception of the clusters, and 4) concluding remarks noting that: (a) the examples indicate that the reordering of a stop-sibilant cluster occurs in a greater number of languages and with more frequency than the reordering of a sibilant-stop cluster, and (b) there is evidence that the occurrence of a sibilant-stop reordering implies the presence of an alveolar or palatal affricate within the sound system of a language.
