Language in the Junior School: Explorations in Language Study.
Ashworth, Eric
This book attempts to define and discuss language in relation to the processes of teaching and learning at the elementary level. Three specific themes are developed. The first theme is that considering language as virtually synonymous with "words" or "vocabulary" seriously limits the understanding an individual can have of the complexity of language as an integrated system of meaning potential. The second theme is that a distinction must be made between language and the use of language in order to develop appropriate strategies for language instruction in the classroom. The final theme is that language is an unusual subject in that teachers must focus directly upon the students' need to expand their existing command of language through reading and writing. (RB)
