Reading Readiness Practices in Kindergartens and First Grades.
Ross, Melvie Lynn
The status of reading readiness practices in kindergarten and first grade was investigated in this study. A questionnaire based on reading readiness research was mailed to kindergarten and first grade teachers in randomly selected school buildings. Frequency of reading readiness practices utilized were tabulated and percentages determined. A follow-up interview was conducted to verify the information received in the questionnaire. The comparison between reading readiness research and reading readiness practices reveals the use of some practices supported by research. However, the results also indicated that practices not being used by teachers but supported by research evidence or those practices used by teachers but not supported with research need to be considered for the improvement of reading readiness programs. Specific practices and research are discussed at length. (Author/TO)
