Ideas: Things to Think About: Sixth Grade.
The sixth grade instructional unit, part of a field-tested grade school level career education series, is designed to assist learners in understanding how present experiences relate to past and future ones. Before the main body of the lessons is described field testing results are reported and key items are presented: the concepts, the estimated time for delivering the lessons, the vocabulary introduced, the resources required, and the instructor preparation tasks. Instructional procedures are presented in three sections--an introduction, learners' tasks, and a summary. Some supplemental activities are presented, strategy and resource profiles provided, and assessment procedures outlined. Stressing increasing self-knowledge through thought provoking activities, the unit provides guidelines and highly structured worksheets to direct inquiry into the nature and sources of ideas, how they change, and how they are expressed. Assessment is based on the completion of activities rather than on values expressed. Games, projects, and self-monitoring activities are designed to reinforce basic competencies. The 11-hour unit, suitable for group and individual instruction, related primarily to the social studies area. An instructional strategy guide, dealing with discussion and role-playing techniques, and an activities resource guide, are appended. (MW)
