The Teacher You Choose to Be.
Proefriedt, William A.
This book is concerned with teachers who must help students develop critical capacities necessary to make value choices, and describes activities suitable for encouraging such critical abilities. Chapter one considers the choices teachers must face in remaining committed to personal values while fulfilling responsibilities of classroom objectivity. Chapter two discusses how values are often transmitted unconsciously by teachers. Chapter three illustrates a humanistic approach to curriculum and guides teachers in promoting teacher-student relationships. Chapter four focuses on behaviorism in education and examines behavioral methods in order to see how behaviorism contributes to or detracts from the teacher's task of developing critical capacities of students. Chapters five and six emphasize the importance of developing students' ability to handle both language and the reasoning process. Chapters seven and eight discuss the scientific thrust of Western society and how significant value issues are concerned with technology. Chapter nine discusses the teacher's role in relation to the world outside the classroom. (Suggested readings are included at the end of each chapter.) (Author/JS)
