Biological Sciences Curriculum Study Newsletter Number 57, A Special Issue on the Preparation of Teachers.

This newsletter is a special issue on the preparation of teachers. An article suggests the use of the Biology Teachers' Handbook, prepared as part of the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) program, as a text in science methods courses. The use of the series of "Invitations to Enquiry" is shown as an example of an effective vehicle to promote active student participation. An article emphasizing the use of individualized instruction as well as suggestions to facilitate such programs is presented as well as an article stressing the how and why of Inquiry Teaching. The Human Sciences project, initiated to emphasize learning from direct experience, is described and means of implementation are suggested. Other articles relate to the new Environmental Module and its present stage of development, a "recipe" for a field trip, and the use of BSCS area consultants for help, for sharing ideas and for learning about new materials available. Other items included are News and Notes related to overseas relevance of the BSCS curriculum strategies and a brief note related to information about recent developments in the fight for freedom in science teaching.
