Habits and Habitats. A Multi-disciplinary, Multi-period, Community-Based Environmental Curriculum.
Gillin, Betty Glasgow
This multidisciplinary multi-period community-based environmental curriculum blends the academic traditions of the humanities and the sciences, namely: social sciences, language art skills, and the physical and life sciences. The centralizing theme of the program is directed toward defining environmentally related problems utilizing the community as a social and scientific laboratory. Through this curriculum students explore various sets of values by which they will be able to make responsible decisions and therefore contribute effectively to their society. Part I of this publication is organizational framework describing how to construct and implement a multidisciplinary environmental curriculum utilizing the community as a social and scientific laboratory. Part II contains a suggested curriculum that would apply to the model set forth in Part I. Part III is a sample bibliography that includes references in the following areas: Socio-cultural investigations, Bio-physical investigations, Language Art activities, Role simulations, and Reference books. Concluding this guide is a supplementary bibliography that contains readings in the literature of ecology and a sample bibliography for comparative community studies. (BT)
