This booklet discusses the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) and its implications for teachers, administrators, and other school personnel. The authors examine in detail particular provisions of the act and offer numerous guidelines for maintaining and utilizing student records in compliance with the act. Separate sections discuss the historical and political context of the FERPA, general implications of the FERPA, different types of student records, preparation of student records, establishment of records access procedures, management of student records, and staff inservice training programs.
