In the spring of 1972 over 1,000 high schools participated in the first phase of the National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972. Extensive data from a sample of almost 18,000 students was gathered. The same individuals will be examined over a period of 6-8 years in order to examine the relationship between schooling and other experiences as career paths begin to emerge. Such information will be useful to planners, policymakers, and educational researchers interested in improving the educational system and making it more responsive to students and their needs. This report contains summary information resulting from the administration of the Student Questionnaire to seniors. Tabulation of the results from questionnaire items 1-37 are presented in this volume. Specifically, these items focus on (1) the student's educational background; (2) student perceptions of the effectiveness of high school programs; (3) participation in extra curricular activities; (4) career plans; (5) personal and peer group goals, expectations, and aspirations for post-secondary education and career experiences; (6) anticipated means of financing post-secondary education.
