The Impact of Competency-Based Teacher Education and Certification Programs in Utah.

Utah is a member of a nine-state consortium to study competency-based teacher education and certification programs. This paper presents an overview of the nationwide movement for competency-based teacher education, followed by a description of the situation in Utah. The State Board of Education is making an effort through the Teacher Education and Certification Section to encourage the development of preservice and inservice competecny-based teacher education and certification programs. The trend in Utah seems to be a grassroots approach exemplifying the shared responsibility concept of teacher certification, that is, involving as much as possible all of the partners in teacher education in the development of new programs.
