Report to the Governor of Maryland and Maryland General Assembly from the Governor's Commission on Environmental Education.
Governor's Commission on Environmental Education, Baltimore, MD.
After a state-wide study, the Maryland Commission on Environmental Education submitted the final report to the Governor and the General Assembly. Embodied in the report were six recommendations for the future of environmental education in Maryland. The necessity for a strong public commitment by the Governor and members of the General Assembly was recognized for an excellent environmental education program. Also, it was recommended that a Maryland Office of Environmental Education be established and adequately staffed and funded. Both public and private school systems were urged to develop environmental education programs in their elementary and secondary schools; and, beyond the grades K-12, some emphasis should be placed in community and continuing education programs. On the collegiate level, there was a call for more research and teaching in the environmental sciences, with adequate funding. Finally, it was recommended that environmental centers be developed in areas throughout the state that can be used by maximum numbers of students. (MA)
