The Language Universals Phonological Archiving Project: 1971 - 1972. Working Papers on Language Universals, No. 9.
Sherman, Don; Vihman, Marilyn
This project was designed to develop machine-searchable files of linguistic data to be interrogated by researchers looking for patterns, examples, and other kinds of evidence bearing on language universals. This preliminary report of the project focuses on a detailed description of the computer program system used, MARC (Machine-Readable Catalog), and on the development of an archive record for storing and retrieving phonetic and phonological data. In the final section of the report some specific examples of the archive material on modern Irish and the North Greenlandic dialect of Eskimo are presented. (PMP)
