This curriculum guide suggests ways for teachers to provide students with learning experiences which develop communication skills and facilitate the learning of language concepts. The guide, whose design is process oriented and student centered, can be used as a basis for developing an individual language arts program for every student. Eight conceptual statements serve as the basis for the program: "language is symbolic" includes a discussion of the uses and values of symbols; "language is used to communicate" discusses the importance of language in observing, listening, speaking, reading, and writing; "language changes constantly" discusses geographic, social, and historical effects on language; "language is a form of social behavior" discusses the relationship between culture and language; "language has power" discusses the use and misuse of language in the media; "language is structured" discusses grammar, vocabulary and syntax; "language is basically oral" discusses the effects of verbal and nonverbal expression on oral language; and "written language is a representation of oral language" discusses the relationship between oral and written language.
