Content Analysis: A Tool for Choosing Texts.
Campbell, Ellen K.
Evaluation and Measurement Newsletter, n17 p1-4 Sep 1973
Some research that has been done into the content of texts in the last several years is reviewed. Much of this content analysis has been undertaken to assess the adequacy of treatment of particular groups in society, on the assumptions that school books are potent conveyors of attitudes and values. Some of the studies have tried to find out whether the approach in some texts may be a factor in the failure of some children to learn adequately--particularly in the reading area. This article familiarizes teachers and administrators with this research, and what its implications are for textbook selection and curriculum planning. Some of the approaches that have been taken so that people undertaking textbook selection may develop some techniques for analyzing new books in a systematic way are also discussed. (Author/RC)
