Research Guidelines for Computer-Assisted Instruction.
Hickey, Albert E.
Prepared for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), this report contains 59 recommendations for research and development in support of computer-assisted instruction (CAI). The guidelines were derived from interviews with 14 leading education researchers. They cover the following learning and instruction variables: (1) learning outcomes; (2) subject-matter hierarchies; (3) instructional strategies and decision rules; (4) individual difference variables including aptitude; (5) locua of control; (6) the student/computer interface; (7) response analysis; and (8) feedback to the student. Additional recommendations cover curriculum development, especially the selection and preparation of the development team, on-line and off-line aids to authors, and generative CAI. The experts also recommend ways and means of implementing the research, especially a cooperative, on-line research network tying several institutions together to obtain better communication and more economical use of the hardware, software, curriculum, subjects, and talent required to cope with the required research in a systematic way.
