National Library of Medicine (NLM) Literature Searches are selected computer-generated bibliographies produced by the Library's Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System (MEDLARS). Selection is made on the basis of a significant current interest of the subject matter to a substantial audience of health professionals. Each Literature Search has been given a short descriptive title with a qualifying subtitle or a brief introductory paragraph indicating the specific point of view of the search. Each citation is listed by author, together with the descriptors selected from NLM's list of medical subject headings (MeSH) under which the article was indexed. Subject headings of major importance in an article are identified with an asterisk, and the article cited will be found in Index Medicus under those headings.
