Word Inventory and Frequency Analysis of French Conversations.
Malecot, Andre
This word frequency list was extracted from a corpus of fifty half-hour conversations recorded in Paris during the academic year 1967-68. The speakers, who did not know that they were being recorded, were all well-educated professionals and all speakers of the most standard dialect of French. The list is made up of all phonetically discrete words recorded, without any attempt to separate homonyms. Each entry includes the alphanumeric phonetic code used in the computerized data file, the conventional international phonetic alphabet (IPA) transcription, one or more of the word's most common orthographic representations, the number of occurrences, the frequency of occurrence in percent, and rank order according to frequency. The introductory section of the document contains a detailed description of the steps involved in compiling the word list. Table 1 shows the age, sex, and occupation of each speaker, together with the subjects of his conversation. (Author/PMP)
