Toward Student-Centered Foreign-Language Programs. Reports of the Working Committees of the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.
Born, Warren C., Ed.
The reports of Working Committees 1 and 2 of the 1974 Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages focus on teacher training for and implementation of student-centered foreign language programs. These two reports are divided into chapters on: (1) preservice, inservice, and self-service teacher training; (2) program implementation; (3) course content orgainization; and (4) selected student-centered programs in action. The student-centered concept is expanded in the report of Working Committee 3, which treats careers, community, and public awareness. This committee has compiled suggestions designed to improve and promote foreign language programs on all levels of instruction. Lists of suggested readings are included in each report. The appendixes contain two articles:"Curriculum Perspectives: The Need for Diversified Services" by E. Birkmaier and "Penetrating the Mass Media: A Unit to Develop Skill in Reading Spanish Newspaper Headlines" by H. N. Seelye and J. L. Day. A partial listing of available scholarships, grants, fellowships, and awards in foreign languages and international studies and a topical index of Northeast Conference reports from 1954 to 1973 are also included.
