Nonpublic Schools in Large Cities: 1970-71 Edition.
Gertler, Diane B.
This publication presents the results obtained from the most recent Survey of Nonpublic Elementary and Secondary Education (1970-71). The data included present a measurement of the scope, describe some of the characteristics, and reflect the status of the nonpublic schools in 43 large cities in the United States. Nonpublic schools are defined as schools that are privately controlled by a nonpublic entity and that are financed from sources other than public taxation or public grants. Included are parochial schools; privately operated schools providing education equivalent to that of the public elementary and secondary schools for students who are deaf, blind, mentally retarded, or who have other types of physical or mental exceptionality; private college preparatory schools or military academies; "finishing" schools; and practice or laboratory schools of private colleges and universities. The survey instrument is presented in the appendix. (Author/DN)
