The Gate-Keeper: An Uncertain Theory. Journalism Monograph No. 37.
Dimmick, John
The theoretical perspective presented in this monograph is intended to answer two fundamental questions: What accounts for the input of the gatekeeping institution in the newsroom? and What accounts for the output of the gatekeeping institution? The organizational role of gatekeeper is to monitor incoming information for its news content; to eliminate those items which are not newsworthy, are irrelevant to the audience, or were already covered; and to submit newsworthy items to the news editor for final consideration. Following the presentation of the theoretical perspective and a review of the limited number of gatekeeper investigations, the monograph includes a pilot study designed to answer empirically those questions posed in theory. A narrative discussion of the results contains tables and figures, and areas for further research are suggested. (RB)
