The purpose of this handbook is to help the high school newspaper advisor define his role, learn how to function as an effective advisor, and become a resource person for the student newspaper staff. The booklet examines the purposes of the student newspaper, discusses the relationship of the advisor and the administration, explains how to organize the staff and work with it, comments on dealing with the printer, emphasizes responsibility in legal and ethical matters, considers new trends in covering the news, presents a few hints for reporting the news, stresses the importance of consistency in the elements of style, explores how feature articles attract readers, suggests ideas for dealing effectively with editorial opinion, urges students to cover more than the statistics in reporting athletic events, elaborates on the fundamentals of sound news gathering and reporting, explains the importance of editing, proposes steps to be taken to produce effective headlines, recommends careful attention to the details of layout, and lists resources useful to the advisor. The book concludes with numerous samples that illustrate the principles explained. (RB)
