Writing the Social History of One's Family...Revised Guidelines for Faculty Members and Students.
Brown, Richard; Hareven, Tamara K.
The Anonymous Families History Project of the University of Minnesota developed guidelines for college students researching and writing the social histories of their families. Included in the guidelines are interview questions, tips for conducting an oral interview, a primary source list, and a bibliography of background reading. Question topics include the organization of family life; family activities; family decision making and status; family careers and opportunity; family life cycle; family migration; and the impact of historical events upon the history of individuals in the family. Oral interview tips include avoiding middle class biases; arranging questions autobiographically and topically; keeping questions short and to the point; concentrating on relationships rather than objects; avoiding abstract historicism; and actively directing the interview.
