Discovering Your Teaching Self; Humanistic Approaches to Effective Teaching.
Curwin, Richard L.; Fuhrmann, Barbara Schneider
This book offers a program of self-improvement for teachers and prospective teachers that grows out of humanistic criteria. The book is a collection of activities designed to increase the reader's potential as a teacher. There is an introduction entitled "Discovering Your Teaching Self." The remaining two sections are devoted to activities. "Awareness of Your Teaching Self," chapter 2, deals with the reader's awareness of himself as a teacher--his ideals, beliefs, attitudes, values, and goals. The activities are internally focused; extensive use is made in this section of fictional logs, such as conversations in which the reader is asked to take part, worksheets, and other assignments which center on discussion of a teacher's role and teacher behavior. The activities in chapter two are designed to help the reader become aware of the teacher he is now and the teacher he would like to become. Chapter 3, "Examining Your Teaching Self," deals with the collection and interpretation of significant data about teaching. These activities are externally focused and are meant to make the reader's classroom behavior congruent with his ideals. Assignments in this section are related to the reader's actual classroom teaching. (JA)
