Seven groups were surveyed during March through June 1972 as to the importance, quality, and extent of use of various student service functions at Harrisburg Area Community College. Faculty, administrators, student services staff, and four student groups (current, graduates, nonreturning, and student counselors) comprised the survey population. Of the 1,088 people who received the survey instrument, 533 responded. Section A of the instrument elicited information related to: Admissions, Registration and Records; Guidance and Counseling; Job Placement and Financial Assistance; Student Activities; Administrative Services; and Use of Student Services. In Section B. the questions concerned: Psychological Services; Student Counselors; Advisor Roles; the Structure of Student Services; Importance of Types of Counseling; Administrative Functions as Related to Student Personnel Services; and Attitudes Toward the Counseling Process. The survey data, which are summarized and tabulated, show that, on the whole, the students and faculty were generally satisfied with the services being provided. The responses did indicate, however, that there was a very real need for the services of a full-time psychologist. There were considerable differences of opinion regarding student counselors; the strengths (academic advising) and a relative weaknesses (nonacademic advising) of faculty advisors were identified; academic-career counseling and vocational/placement counseling were more important to students than to the student services administration; and the majority of the students felt that seeking counseling was a sign of strength.
