Evaluation of a Course by Newspaper ("America and the Future of Man").
Kaplan, Oscar J.
The first national course by newspaper entitled "America and the Future of Man" was offered by the University of California, San Diego extension, beginning in September 1973. A series of 20 articles by distinguished scholars appeared weekly in 263 newspapers. A total of 4,974 persons enrolled in the course for credit through 188 participating colleges and universities. The impact of the course was assessed in the following ways: (1) telephone interviews were held with random samples of newspaper subscribers. The areas chosen represented four distinctly different sections of the United States. (2) A mail survey was made of persons who purchased the course kit but who did not enroll in the course for credit; (3) Essay and multiple choice examinations were administered to students enrolled in the course for credit. The characteristics of the enrolles were ascertained. Profiles were developed on the age, sex, educational attainment and other characteristics of persons in each of the 3 categories studied. The results indicate that--courses by newspaper, properly developed and promoted, could have an immense impact on American life. Appendices include the subscriber surveys, the questionnaire, and the final examination. (Author)
