Needs for Higher Education Related to Regional and Statewide Economic Development in Connecticut.
Little (Arthur D.), Inc., Cambridge, MA.
This report was designed to assist the Connecticut Commission for Higher Education in its major study of the immediate- and long-range needs, resources, finances, and plans for higher education in Connecticut. This study is focused largely on ways of enabling higher education to facilitate the socioeconomic development of the various regions of the state and therefore of the state as a whole. Chapter 2 presents the recommendations from this study and a brief discussion of the rationale underlying each recommendation. Chapter 3 summarizes demographic and socioeconomic trends and projections in the state as a whole. Chapter 4 describes how the planning region of the state were aggregated into 6 geographic areas for purposes of analyzing intrastate variations of socioeconomic and higher educational need. Each of the next six chapters deals with the regional development needs of the 6 geographical areas of the state, the roles and programs of both public and independent institutions of higher education as they relate to those needs, and a characterization of those developmental needs that appear to be inadequately met. Chapter 9 summarizes the analysis of the questionnaire survey administered to a sample of high school seniors in Connecticut. In brief, it deals with questions of: after high school--what, and why? Twenty seven tables and a copy of the questionnaire used in the survey conclude this report. (Author/PG)
