An Evaluation of a Vocational Interest Test in Recruiting Officers.
Thomas, Patricia J.; Hinsvark, Don G.
In 1970 an exploratory study was conducted with the Strong Vocational Interest Blank (SVIB) as a tool for recruiting officer candidates in high schools. Of the 460 students tested, the 96 who scored high on the Navy officer keys for the SVIB were contacted and encouraged to apply to the Naval Academy. Motivation toward a Navy career was rated on a seven point scale by the officer who interviewed them. In followup interviews conducted in 1971 with 91 of the original 96 interviewees, motivation toward achieving a commission was again rated. Of the thirteen students who applied for an NROTC scholarship or the Naval Academy, over half had not considered applying prior to seeing their interest profiles. The use of the SVIB to identify and encourage potential officers thus appeares to be an effective means of officer recruiting. (Author)
