Diversity by Design: Commission on Non-Traditional Study.
Gould, Samuel B.
This book is the official final report of the Commission on Non-Traditional Study's 2-year study containing its findings and major recommendations. It deals with lifelong learning, external degrees, new institutions, faculty involvement, new evaluation modes, educational technology, and college and community cooperation. It presents almost 60 specific recommendations for actions. Among the most important are: (1) lifelong learning--basic, continuing, and recurrent--requires a new pattern of support; (2) colleges and universities must shift emphasis from degree-granting to service to the learner; (3) faculty must be redirected through inservice development to use of nontraditional forms and materials; (4) educational technology, such as cable television, computers, videotape recordings, and satellite broadcasting, must be used and promoted; (5) new agencies must be created to provide and disseminate information, to provide counseling, and to assess and keep student credits.
